Secular Franciscan Order Appeals to U.N. on Congo HUNGARY, 21 Nov. 2008 – The General Chapter of the Secular Franciscan Order endorsed a letter to be sent by the general minister to the secretary general of the United Nations, calling for immediate action to stem the violence and terror in the Congo. The letter from an Order representing 400,000 Secular Franciscans in 110 countries calls on the U.N. to send more peace-keeping troops to the area, provide a safe haven for relief workers, and use human rights as an approach to the peace process. The letter will be submitted through Franciscans International at the U.N. The Secular Franciscan Order consulted and collaborated with Franciscans International on drafting the appeal, General Vice Minister Doug Clorey said. Earlier in the General Chapter, the international Franciscan body sent a letter of prayer, solidarity and support to Secular Franciscans suffering in the Congo. ### |
