Circ. 55/02-08 Rome, July 25, 2007
To the National Councils of the SFO
To the SFO International Councilors

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Attached is a position paper prepared by Franciscans International entitled "Human Rights, Poverty and Extreme Poverty". The paper was written based on the responses received to a questionnaire that was sent to Franciscan brothers and sisters who work with the poor, and represents input from all continents and all branches of the Franciscan family. The document is intended to be used as a tool to raise the issue of poverty and extreme poverty at the national, regional and international levels, and to enable the Franciscan family to present its concerns and recommendations to States and different bodies and experts at the United Nations. It is available in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German at www.franciscansinternational.org.

"It remains essential that everyone learn more about poverty and extreme poverty, ‘facing’ instead of ‘avoiding’ poverty, and that each and every one of us feel involved as a member of the human family. We can all contribute, according to our own means and abilities, to poverty eradication." (Human Rights, Poverty and Extreme Poverty Position Paper, Franciscans International, March 2007).

You are encouraged to read this paper and to become more knowledgeable about this human problem and how it can be addressed. With gratitude to Franciscans International, the document is being distributed to support the work of the entire Franciscan family in providing a voice to the poor and in effecting positive change within the human family.

Fraternally,

Doug Clorey,

Coordinator,
